Specifications

The SPUs used in the GPU have been moved to the central processing unit (CPU) of the PS5. As a result, more CPU cycles can be utilized to accelerate the processing. As was the case with the PS4 Pro, PS5's GPU will be an 8-core unit, while the CPU will use 8 custom x86 cores. The GPU has 2160 cores with a rate of 390 GTexel/s.

The CPU will have 36 custom x86 cores with a rate of 1.84 TFlops. The new console will come in a slimmer, rectangular box with slimmer PS and PlayStation logos.

The branding was heavily integrated into the design of the box, making it easy to identify for people who are not familiar with the PlayStation brand. It is rumored that the PS5 will have an eight-core CPU and a 16-core GPU. In comparison, the PS4 Pro has a 12-core CPU and a GPU with a rate of 1.

What to Expect from the New Console

Remember when the PS2 and the PS3 both came out in 2006, almost ten years ago, and neither of them was a notable upgrade over the original PS2 console?

That's because both the PS2 and PS3 shipped without the processing and graphics chips that were being ramped up at the time to give developers and gamers the power to do something other than render 2D games and content on the "GamePad" device that both consoles shipped with. I can't think of a better example of the difference in focus and the direction the console industry has taken in the last decade than that.

Sony, which was once the industry giant, is a shadow of its former self, and it's now focused more on its back catalog than any games-as-service innovation, outside of its own PlayStation Now game-streaming service.

Conclusion

This is the first post of this series as we analyze the strengths and weaknesses of PlayStation 5. We will also give you a perspective on how PlayStation 5 compares to Xbox Scorpio, and we will also do a brief discussion on the XPS launch pricing.

We expect that it will take over 4 to 6 years for PlayStation 5 to be officially launched. We can expect Sony to do a few surprises in the PS5 launch, as it did in the PS4 launch.
