It is soon the end of an era for the Play Store: from August, developers will have to submit
applications to the Google store in a new format that replaces the famous APK.
Next month, new apps that will be submitted to the Play Store will have to be
delivered in the Android App Bundle (ABB) format. This is a major change for thousands
of developers, who until now are used to delivering their apps in APK
(Android Application Package) format. The new bundle has been available since 2018,
but developers still had the option of using the APK.
Only the Play Store can install ABBs
Over a million apps are distributed in ABB, including many heavyweights like Netflix,
Twitter, Adobe apps, Gameloft games, etc. From now on, everyone will have to go there,
at least for new applications. Updates can continue to be submitted as APKs but reading
Google between the lines, that too could change
quickly.

The ABB format has several advantages from the user's point of view:
the application weight is lighter, on average 15% compared to an APK.
The ABB apps distributed by the Play Store are adapted to the configurations
and the language of the users. ABBs are therefore faster to download, which
favors installations.
For developers too, the strengths of the Android App Bundle are interesting:
the signatures protecting the integrity of the apps are stronger, the distribution
of the different graphic elements is more flexible and efficient. In short, on paper,
the ABB is far superior to the APK. The catch is that only the Play Store can use the
new bundles, which means you can't install them outside of the Google store like APKs are.
